I find short burst quizzes effective in drawing information out of students from prior learning. I use this technique not just to pull out information that was learnt in the prior lesson but also to draw in what was learnt 4 lessons ago for example, and how that information will be relevant to the current lesson at hand. I also find it useful drawing in information from what their other tutors have learnt them
"You looked and topic X with lecturer Y last week, why is what you might be learning today relevant?'
